(4) Reported Speech Exercise

REPORTED SPEECH

Reported speech is used to report what someone says. To report it accurately, we have to change the tense so as to reflect the certain situation when it must belong to.

1. Present simple into Past Simple
         Direct Speech: Jhon said  " I am happy"
         Reported Speech : He said that he was happy

2. Present continuous into Past continuous 
         Direct Speech: Delo said  " I am worrying about my future "
         Reported Speech : He said that he was worrying about his future

3. Past Simple into Past Perfect Simple
         Direct Speech: Sandy said  " I was sick last night "
         Reported Speech : He said that he had been sick the previous night.

4. Past Continuous into Past Perfect Continuous 
         Direct Speech: Pete said  " I was reading all night long "
         Reported Speech : He said that  he had been reading all night long.

5. Present Perfect into Past Perfect
         Direct Speech: Pete said  " I have done it"
         Reported Speech : He said that  he had done it.

6. Modal ( can and will)
         Direct Speech: Simon said  " I can finish my work quicker"
         Reported Speech : He said that  he could finish my work quicker.

        Direct Speech: Simon said  " I will visit you tommorow"
        Reported Speech : He said that  he would visit you the following day.

language note ##### no change for must and past perfect


Question case
           1. For yes/no question must be changed into if/whether
           Direct Speech: Shane asked me  " Are you ok?"
           Reported Speech : He asked me whether/if I was ok.

          
           1. For 5 W H question must be changed into Relative Clause
           Direct Speech: Shane asked me  " where do you live?"
           Reported Speech : He asked me where I lived.
